working for Brynn is my first official experience working in the retail business during a holiday season, and I’m really seeing what it takes as a small independent business to compete with the big dogs. working on this side of things has opened my eyes to why businesses choose to run certain sales, how and why they market specific things, and how important your purchasing behaviors are.

What’s different about this holiday season for me is that I’m not just the shopper, but i’m also on the other side of retail. So after one of the biggest weekends in retail (now known as #BFCM), it got me thinking. how do small businesses keep up with the all shopping madness that gets crazier by the day.

In this environment, I’ve learned so much about how important purchasing behaviors are, and how much my personal purchasing choices can affect the community around me. By shopping and dining at local places throughout the year you are making a positive impact in your community and for an individual that is personally appreciating your purchase and counting on you to make a living. I didn’t really understand the importance of this until working for someone who owns a small business.

Now that I understand my impact more fully, I’ve learned not just buy things because I think they’re cute- it’s up to me as a customer to be responsible in knowing where the things I am buying are coming from, and the impact it can have on the industry.

Beyond just Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, we have seen other specific sale days be created to support others and offer ways of giving back. small business Saturday was started in 2010 by American express a way to give small business a chance to keep up after the substantial Black Friday sales. over the years this idea has turn into an entire movement and has become a key day in helping communities thrive.

So although small businesses might not be able to offer the substantial discounts that the big dogs do, it’s about understanding the reasons why. With them you are also supporting the environment. fast fashion is the 2nd dirtiest industry in the world. right after oil. I also have learned that they keep their markups lower and their value high.

So when you think about it, you are getting a better deal year round.
